Don’t be afraid

I just wanted to share my two cent’s worth of advice because I was alarmed by the title of this website… Why are you afraid guys? I am from Istanbul, Turkey, I’ve been in Gezi protests, we’ve been going through living hell as liberals, LGBT, leftists, women, kurds, intellectuals, for having long hair, short hair, no hair, headscarf, no headscarf, for years. Have been gassed and tortured and detained and beaten, yet we keep going on…You’re new to this kind of faschism, ok, first rule of the fight club, don’t be afraid! you can beat this shit to hell if you organize well, support each other and make your voice heard. And you will, because you are America, you are pioneer minded, you were founded by immigrants who wanted a better world, you are diverse and the world watches your every step. Make the world great again, don’t go hiding under covers. You can and you have to, kind of…It’s in your hands now to spark the fire. Go on, we love you!

MOD RESPONSE: We frequently get asks making similar statements, though none so eloquently. I’m touched by your words, and yet I feel I should clarify. The name of the site was a direct response to the sentiment that there was nothing to worry about in a Trump presidency, and any kind of concern was an overreaction. The posts here show that concern is legitimate.

I don’t think that being afraid necessarily implies cowering. In some ways, to be completely unafraid would be foolish. I started this site because I fear for myself and my loved ones, but that fear has spurred anger, it’s spurred resolve, and it’s spurred the very kind of organizing you speak of.

Yes, we’re afraid. But that’s not all we are.
